With everyone’s different shifts and responsibilities, it was rare to have lunch with all my friends at the same time. But every once in a blue moon, all our breaks aligned. It was even sunny today and despite the brisk autumn wind, we opted for eating outside. It would be one of the last times before winter came. Maybe I should eat with the other apprentices sometime but they seemed more than happy to eat behind their laptops. As much as I admired their work ethic, that wasn’t really a break.

I placed my red tray on the wooden table, choosing the seat opposite Felicity. She briefly looked up and a hint of a smile appeared around her lips. “Hey.”

“Hiya.” I groaned when I finally sat down. “Ooh, that’s nice. I’ve been on my feet all day.”

She chuckled. “You can’t possibly be doing more physical labour than when you were a unicorn intern.”

“I’m not but I’m constantly going from one place to the other. It’s quite a walk from the compound to the Phoenix House,” I complained, even though I enjoyed walking through the Sanctuary. Especially now the weather was still lovely.

Felicity’s eyes darted up to mine. “Well, all the walking certainly agrees with you.”

Her gaze burned into me and my cheeks immediately heated up. I ignored her comment, in the hope she would change the topic.

“So have you heard from your ex again?” Felicity asked casually.

Not quite the topic I had in mind. I studied the girl next to me, surprised she brought it up. Her light tone suggested it was a casual question but there was something about her that made me think it wasn’t as nonchalant as she wanted me to believe. Was she fishing? Or was she just making conversation?

“From Tina?” I kept a close eye on my companion, hoping to read her reaction. “No, not after we saw each other last. I think it was the closure we both needed. I don’t know, I don’t really care.”

“I thought she was the love of your life?”

“That’s what I wanted to believe. I’ve always been in love with the idea of being in love but…” I took a thoughtful bite of my salad. “I seem to keep missing the mark. I’m just as bad as the phoenixes.”

“Are they having trouble with romance?” Felicity inquired.

I nodded. “Oh yeah, a lot of trouble. The problem seems to be that Erinna just isn’t interested in Apollo. He’s doing his best to seduce her but she’s not having any of it.”

Felicity chuckled. “The heart wants what the heart wants?”

“More like the cloaca wants what the cloaca wants,” I grumbled. “I don’t know what Erinna’s problem is, Apollo is a very handsome drake. Then again, I’m not an expert on flirting so who knows.”

Felicity cocked her head to the side, the wind playing with her braid. “Phoenix flirting or human flirting?”

“Both.”

“I don’t know, you might be better at it than you think,” she quipped, turning to look at me. The intensity in her gaze made my stomach flutter and I quickly looked away, not sure what to make of it.
